Baraat outfits to rent or buy

The baraat is the arrival. Everyone is outside, the dhol is going, and someone is filming. Dress for movement and for photographs taken in full sun, not for a seated dinner.

About baraat dressing

Baraat dressing is outdoor dressing. You will be standing, walking and probably dancing before you ever sit down, so the weight of a piece matters more than it does at a nikkah or a walima. A farshi or a sharara moves well on uneven ground. A heavily beaded trail does not.

Color is the other decision. The baraat is the brightest, loudest event of the wedding and it is almost always shot in daylight, so this is the day for saturated color: marigold, magenta, deep red, antique gold, emerald. Pale neutrals photograph beautifully and do badly on grass, so think about where you will actually be standing.

Keep the dupatta pinned. The baraat is the windiest part of a Pakistani wedding and the one where the most pictures get taken.

FAQ

Baraat questions

Wear something you can stand and move in outdoors. Shararas, ghararas and farshi lehengas work well because the volume sits off the ground rather than dragging on it. Saturated color photographs best in daylight, so marigold, magenta, deep red and antique gold all work. Pin your dupatta and pick a heel you can walk on grass in.

A sharara is the easier choice. The flared leg moves with you and nothing drags, which matters at an event held outdoors and largely standing. A lehenga works too, as long as the hem is not weighted with heavy beading. Both are available to rent for four days with cleaning included.

It is the most formal daytime event of the week. Guests dress at full occasion level, heavier than a dholki or a mayun and closer to what they would wear to the walima. The difference is that the baraat happens outdoors in daylight, so fabric weight and how a piece moves matter more than at an evening reception.
