What Color Should You Wear to a Pakistani Walima?

Everyone warns you off red. At a walima, red is the safe choice, and the pale shade you picked to play it safe is the one that clashes.

At a Pakistani walima, guests should avoid white, ivory, cream, champagne, blush and nude, because Pakistani brides often wear these pale shades at the walima, the reception hosted by the groom's family after the wedding. Red, maroon, deep pink, jewel tones and rich colors are all appropriate for guests.

Two weeks before the wedding, Megan asked Hira what to wear.

"Wear whatever you want!! Just come."

Brides always say this. It is kind, and it is no help at all.

So Megan searched it, and the internet agreed on one rule: don't wear red. Red belongs to the bride. She found a dusty pink kurta with a thin line of gold at the neck. Quiet. Correct. She hung it on her closet door a week early so she could look at it.

The card said 7:30. At 7:30 the hall was mostly empty chairs and one man testing a microphone. By nine it was full and loud and warm. A line had formed at the side of the stage, where the couple sat on a gold sofa under more flowers than Megan had ever seen in one room.

No article had mentioned this part. Everyone goes up. Everyone gets a photo.

When her turn came, she climbed the three steps and leaned in beside Hira. Only then did she see it.

Blush. Champagne embroidery. A shade apart.

Hira's little sister, holding somebody's phone, laughed. "You matched!"

"You look so pretty," Hira said, and meant it.

"One more," said the photographer.

It took eleven seconds. Nobody minded. Megan minded all through dinner, which came out after ten, and again on Sunday when the photo went up on Instagram.

Megan is a composite, built from questions non-South Asian guests ask online before their first Pakistani wedding. The mistake is real, and it's common.

Why the usual rule is backwards here

The rule most guides quote is "don't wear red." It comes from weddings where the bride wears red on the main day. At a Pakistani wedding, the bride usually wears red at the barat. At the walima she often changes to something lighter: ivory, champagne, silver or pale gold. HMAG Pakistan's coverage of Bridal Couture Week 2025 named paper white and ivory among the season's leading bridal tones, and ice blue is showing up too.

So the guest who chooses soft blush to look respectful may end up in the bride's color family.

What to avoid, what's safe, what's safe but forgettable

  • Avoid: white, ivory, cream, champagne, blush, nude and pale silver.
  • Safe: red, maroon, deep rani pink, emerald, sapphire, plum, mustard, teal.
  • Safe but forgettable: beige and taupe. Nobody will be offended, and nobody will remember them in the photos.

The part nobody says out loud

Most walima color mistakes come from trying too hard to be modest. Pale feels polite. At this event it reads as competing with the bride. If you're unsure, go deeper, not lighter.

If the invitation names a theme

Follow the theme, and still stay away from its palest shade. If you know the bride is wearing ice blue, avoid pale blue as well. When in doubt, ask someone on the bride's side. Nobody minds the question.

In the spring there was another wedding, a cousin of Hira's. This time Megan didn't ask the bride. She asked the sister.

The reply came before she'd put her phone down.

"walima? wear a color. maroon, green, anything. just not pale."

When a rule is quoted by everyone, how do you find out it was written for a different wedding?
