About Devon Avenue

If you are shopping for a desi outfit in Chicago you are going to Devon, or you are being told to go to Devon, or you are explaining to someone why you did not go to Devon.

Devon runs at 6400 north, through West Ridge. The South Asian stretch sits roughly between Western and California, and it has been that stretch since 1973, when India Sari Palace opened as the first South Asian business on the street. Patel Brothers followed in 1974 and turned fifty last year. The honorary street signs along it carry Gandhi, Jinnah, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and, still, Golda Meir, which tells you the whole history of the block in four names.

Two things have happened to it.

The first is that the community moved. Chicago's South Asian population grew about sevenfold since 1980, from roughly 35,000 to around 255,000 by 2021, and almost all of that growth landed in the suburbs. Naperville has over 13,000. Schaumburg has around 9,000. Aurora has around 8,000. A Mall of India opened in Naperville. The stores followed the people out, and a vacant garage at Devon and Rockwell has been a parking problem on the corridor for close to two decades.

Today, Devon Avenue is purely nostalgic. I don't think I've been to Devon in the last, maybe, 10 years.

That is a longtime West Ridge resident, quoted by WBEZ in 2023, in a piece that asked directly whether suburban Chicago was taking away Devon Avenue's Little India title.

The second is that shopping there got hard in a specific way. Not expensive in the abstract. Hard in the fitting room. A Chicagoan wrote this on r/AskChicago in March 2025, after visiting three stores on Devon in one afternoon:

It's been tough finding something that fits off the rack. Boob cups were in the wrong spot, armholes were too tight, and the skirts were way too big. I had a bit of luck at Studio Elite, but most outfits were in the $350 to $500 range including tailoring, which is more than I'd like to spend.

Bridal on Devon runs higher than that. Sahil Exclusive, at 2605 W Devon, currently lists bridal lehengas from $699 to $6,999 on its own site.

So people route around it. They buy on Poshmark. They buy on Facebook Marketplace. They wait for a trip to India. Or they do the thing that has always worked, which somebody on r/AskChicago described better than we could:

I would just ask if someone in the family has an extra one to borrow. If it's an Indian wedding, there's bound to be some aunties out there with some extra who is going to show up. I did that for a friend's wedding and it was so much better than buying something I'll probably never wear again.

That is our entire business, written by a stranger on the internet, unprompted, four years ago.

We are not a replacement for Devon. Go to Devon. Buy the bridal lehenga there if it is your wedding and you want to keep it. Get it fitted properly. Devon is worth keeping alive, and a corridor that has not had a serious piece of journalism written about it since 2024 could use the foot traffic.

We are for the other eleven outfits. The cousin's sangeet. The friend's mehndi. The reception where you are a guest and not the point.

The prices are not the problem

A lehenga costs what it costs because somebody sat with it. Zardozi is worked by hand, one metal thread at a time, for weeks. When a store on Devon quotes $700, or $3,000, or $7,000, that number is mostly labor, and the labor was real.

The problem is what happens next. Four hours at a reception. Then eleven years in a closet in a suburb, in a bag, behind the winter coats. Someone spent three months of their life on a garment that got one evening.

That is not a money argument. It is a respect argument. Things made by hand are supposed to be used.

And the second thing nobody says: the guilt runs the wrong direction. People feel bad about not shopping on Devon. Nobody feels bad about the closet.

When to order for a Chicago wedding

Everything ships from our Houston studio. FedEx Home Delivery publishes Houston to Chicago at three business days each way, and runs weekends, including Sunday in eligible ZIP codes, which most of Chicago is. We confirm your ZIP at checkout rather than guessing.

A rental runs four days. Booking closes five days before the rental starts. So for a Saturday event we ship Monday, it arrives Thursday, and the order has to be placed by the Saturday one week before. Friday and Sunday events work the same way, one week out.

Those are the floors, not the plan. A week out is the floor. Three weeks out is the booking.

Here is why, and it is not a sales line. We hold one physical garment per style per size. Not a warehouse rack of twelve. One. When someone in Naperville books the emerald in a medium for the last Saturday in September, that is the emerald in a medium for that Saturday. There is no second one in the back.

Garba season, specifically

The Chicago garba calendar does not wait for Navratri. It opens the first weekend of September, and the two big nights are back to back at Wintrust Field in Schaumburg: Atul Purohit on Friday 25 September and Falguni Pathak on Saturday 26 September. Working backwards, the order-by dates are 18 and 19 September.

Where Chicago actually gets married

The rooms below all host South Asian weddings, and the detail beside each one is the thing worth knowing before you tour it. Several of them are worth reading closely on catering, because outside catering is the single requirement that decides whether a venue works for a desi wedding at all.

Who you will be working with

Thirty businesses across five categories, each one checked on its own website in August 2026. We are not affiliated with any of them, none of them paid to be here, and we take nothing if you book them. The list exists because a page about renting an outfit in Chicago that cannot tell you who shoots weddings in Chicago is not really about Chicago.

Photographers and planners are the deepest categories in this city and both are genuinely strong. Hair and makeup is the thin one: only a handful of artists here run a first-party website that says South Asian anywhere on it, and most of the working ones operate out of Instagram. If you are booking beauty in Chicago, start early and expect to work through direct messages.

A note on what we do not do

We do not have a showroom in Chicago and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Everything ships from Houston. There is no Chicago pickup, no Chicago fitting room, and no Chicago try-on.

What that costs you is the chance to touch the fabric first. What it buys you is a catalog that is not limited to what one storefront could hold, at a price that is not carrying the rent on a Devon Avenue lease.

The suburbs are the other half of the answer

Ask on r/AskChicago where to buy a desi outfit and Devon comes up first, then somebody names a suburb. It happens almost every time, and the reason is always the same one word: fixed price.

Devon runs on negotiation. Some people enjoy that and get a good outcome. Plenty of people find out afterwards that the person next to them paid less, which is its own kind of expensive. The suburban stores that get named in those threads, in Naperville, Schaumburg, Buffalo Grove and Bridgeview, tend to price on the tag, and that predictability is most of why they get named.

It is worth knowing this before you spend a Sunday on Devon expecting a fixed-price experience, and it is worth knowing that the suburbs are where the population actually went. If you live in the western suburbs, the drive to Devon is not short, and it is not obviously the closer option any more.

Pakistani, Indian, desi, South Asian

A quick note on words, because Chicago searches for all four and they are not interchangeable.

Most of what gets written about this city says Indian, because that is the word Google understands and because the corridor was built around Gujarati and Punjabi businesses. But Devon has been Pakistani and Bangladeshi as long as it has been Indian, the Pakistan Independence Day parade runs down the same street as the India one, and the silhouettes are not identical. A gharara is not a lehenga. A walima is not a reception, whatever a catalog tells you.

We rent across all of it, and when we describe a piece we try to call it what the person wearing it would call it, rather than flattening everything into whichever word ranks best.
